Some Misconceptions About Residential Roofing

The perfect roof for any residential home can be expensive and requires a lot of thought and shopping around for the right residential roofing contractor. However, there’s a lot of information out there as far as what materials to use, who the best contractor’s are and various installation techniques that can confuse and overwhelm any homeowner. Here are a few suggestions that should help in choosing the right contractor for your roof.

Always get bids from as many residential roofers as possible then choose the bid that is the lowest. However, you also need to consider every option available to choose the right contractor. The lowest bid doesn’t always mean that contractor is the most experienced and knowledgeable in repairing your roof. Also, the amount that you spend depends greatly on what your insurance company says.

If your roof has been damaged from nearby trees or acts of nature such as lightening or storms, you need to contact your insurance company that handles your homeowners insurance. The insurance claims adjustor will evaluate what the total cost of a new roof will be. The insurance adjustor will make a decision based on the rates of the contractor you choose. Your insurance company will send you a check for the total amount of course minus your deductible. You will also receive another check that will be for the amount the contractor needs after repairing your roof.

One thing to remember is that not all residential roofing contractor’s are created equal. If a contractor claims they have the knowledge and experience behind them to repair any type of roof, you have the right as a consumer to doubt their words. Unfortunately, there are only a few roofers that can actually do any type of roofing job. Many of them are trained on various installation techniques and various roofing repairs, however, in reality they have never had any jobs that require that knowledge.

When searching for the right roofing contractor, it’s best to find out exactly what type of roofing jobs they have done such as what types of materials they have experience with using. This will help you to determine which is the right roofing contractor for your roof.

There is always something a homeowner can do to extend the life of their roof. The best thing to do is have the gutters and chimney cleaned at least once a year. It also helps to have a roofing inspector the roof at least once a year for damages.

Tips On Moving To Back Bay

Posted by - October 11, 2011 - Moving

Did you just get a new house or apartment in Back Bay? A lot of people are looking at moving to Back Bay and one of the reasons is because of how much there is there. If you have spent some time in Back Bay then you know that there is a lot to offer somebody and because of this the amount of people keeps on growing.

When moving to Back Bay one of the things that you need to think about is whether or not you are going to handle the entire move by yourself. For a lot of people it makes more sense to see about using movers in Back Bay because they will do everything for you. If you have a lot of things going on in your life at the moment then moving all of your stuff is not what you need to be doing, you need to be concentrating on the most important task at a time.

One of the things that I would suggest is that you create a plan for the move. If you are going to be doing all the packing then I would suggest that you create a plan as to what is packed first, second and so on. If you can create a good plan for the entire packing and moving process then you should have no problem moving quickly and efficiently. My only advice is to create a plan for everybody that will be taking part in the moving process so that everybody knows exactly what they are required to do. This will help you out a lot so don’t underestimate this.

If moving to Back Bay is something that you are worried about then don’t be. Moving is hard because people make it that way. What I suggest is that you just take your time and make sure that you plan out everything that you need to do.

Reasons For Using Double Casement Windows

Posted by - September 6, 2011 - Windows

Double casement windows are basically casement windows that come with two casements. They are available in various styles – with or without a mullion and symmetrical or asymmetrical casement. The ones with mullions can be opened either horizontally or vertically, while in the ones without a mullion one casement opens horizontally and the other vertically.

Strength is the biggest advantage of double casement windows. Since these are generally made from aluminum, these are extremely durable and can withstand wear and tear over a very long stretch of time. When fitted with high quality glass, these are the strongest and the most durable window options. They are also extremely easy to maintain and need nothing more than regular cleaning. Moreover, these are also energy efficient when fitted with appropriate glass. Glass options include Impact or Insulated Impact that allows for higher energy efficiencies, thereby minimizing heat loss from the room. Then there are glass options with Low-E coating that is suited for very high levels of energy efficiency. When the glass is laminated, it can even block up to 99% of UV rays

The double casement windows are available in a variety of styles and finishes and one can get them in the style that best fits one’s choices and needs. Unlike the other types of windows available in the market, the lock of a casement window is embedded within the frame itself, thereby making it an extremely safe option for homes. They cannot be opened up like double hung windows and neither can they be lifted off their tracks.

Double casement windows provide excellent ventilation in the rooms they are placed in. They are equipped with a sash that funnels in the breeze and directs it to the interiors of a house, thereby facilitating the incoming of air from all directions.

What Kind of Siding is the Most Resistant to Fire?

Posted by - May 15, 2011 - Siding

If you are weighing your options in regard to buying new siding for your house, one of your primary concerns may be the flammability of whatever product you are putting on your house. If the time ever comes that your home catches fire then you may very naturally wish to know that your siding is retarding rather than helping the flame.

The four basic kinds of siding are vinyl, wood, aluminum, and fiber cement siding. The two that are considered flammable are wood and vinyl. Vinyl siding has been shown to have the worst track record in regard to fire.Vinyl siding manufacturers claim that it burns slowly, but in tests it catches flame more quickly than treated wood does, and it has been shown that it is especially easy for fire to jump between two houses that are both covered with vinyl siding. Furthermore, vinyl releases a toxic chemical when it burns. While this is not a danger to the environment, it is a danger to firefighters and people standing by. People unfortunate enough to be caught inside a house while vinyl siding is burning on the outside of it suffer a much incidence of death and sickness from smoke inhalation than people in other sorts of houses.

Wood is not as dangerous in a fire as vinyl, however it is certainly flammable. Fiber cement siding and aluminum siding are both thought to be fire proof, as they are made out of materials that are not naturally flammable. However, they can still be damaged by fire, especially the aluminum. Aluminum may not burn, but it does grow soft and will twist and become misshapen during a fire. Fiber cement is the strongest kind of siding available in almost any situation, and it is extremely resistant to fire.

When it comes to cost, though, vinyl siding is cheapest, and it is among the longest lasting as well. Wood and aluminum both cost more than vinyl, and fiber cement costs the most at all. Covering your house with fiber cement siding may be nearly twice as expensive as vinyl siding would be.

Commercial Roof Repair – Flat Roofs

Posted by - April 16, 2011 - Roof Repair

Flat roofs are used on both commercial and residential buildings with the majority being on commercial buildings. Flat roofs require professional commercial roofers with flat roof experience. Unfortunately, many commercial flat roofs are installed by roofing contractors with only general roofing experience or other general contractors or custom home builders with limited experience in commercial roofing applications. The results are repairs that are needed not long after the roof has been installed.

Most leaks that need repaired are from commercial flat roofs that use a single ply rubber membrane. This new type of roofing material replaces the older base sheet and multiple layers of felt paper applied with hot asphalt or coal tar. This was then applied with gravel to extend the life of the roof. This roofing method is called “built up roofing” or BUR. Many times this type of roof out lasted the single ply rubber membrane roof even though less high-tech materials were not used.

If the cost of having your commercial flat roof outweighs the cost of having a new one installed, be sure to hire a roofing contractor that is experienced with commercial flat roofs and knowledgeable in the materials that are used.. Be sure to get plenty of referrals from other companies in the area that have used the roofing contractor that you have chosen. You will also want to get a bid from several commercial roofing contractors to be sure they will use the materials required. Ask as many questions as possible about the contractor’s experiences with commercial flat roofs, and their knowledge of flat roof materials and systems.

The commercial flat roofs of today use many different materials. There are some commercial roofers that still claim single ply membrane is still the best choice for commercial roofs. However, other commercial roofers insist that the newer materials such as TPO or thermoplastic polyefin, SBS or self adhering membrane and even PVC membrane which uses hot air as a welding for seams, are the perfect commercial roofing systems. Every commercial roofing contractor has their preferred roofing system. When looking for a commercial roofing contractor, look for a long history of service in your area and talk to their customers. Also keep in mind the climate in your state or region. Any roofing system whether it be for residential or commercial can only be successful if it’s made out of material that is specific for the climate in your area. The roofing contractor that you choose should know how to install and repair that roofing system.

All about Building Precast Retaining Walls

Posted by - April 10, 2011 - Building

Precast retaining walls can be a great addition to your outdoor space such as your yard or garden by making it more attractive, more organized and more functional. Once you decide that you want to have some precast retaining walls built, you have the choice of having the job done by a contractor or a professional landscaper or doing it yourself. Keep in mind that although you can do the job yourself, before doing so, you would need to make sure that you know exactly what you need to do and that you have the right tools and equipment for the project. Here is a guide on how you can build a precast retaining wall in your garden.

First off, you need to prepare the area where the wall would be constructed through digging a trench that is of the same length as the wall. As for the width of trench, it should be equal to the width of your planned wall plus about six inches on both side to allow for extra room as you work.

You should then build the form. This is an important step to do before you construct the retaining wall itself. The form would be the mold where the cement would be poured into and should be built with the internal measurements equivalent to the final wall size.

You then have to place the rebar. In order to have added strength and sturdiness, you would have to add lengths of reinforcement rods or rebar. Drive the rebar in the ground every 18 inches. If you are planning to cap it with cement, you need to make sure that the rebar would be sticking up about an inch or so on top of the bottom edge of the spreaders.

Once the rebar is in place, you can then pour the cement. Depending on the size of the retaining wall you would be building, you can choose to mix the cement yourself or you can order it pre-mixed from a hardware or a landscaping supply store.
